A semiotic approach to the interprretation of statiscal graphs in a fifth grade school texbook in Colombia

Abstract
This article is part of the research activities developed by the author in the Doctorado Interinstitucional en Educación of the Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas and it presents a semiotic analysis of the situations proposed in a school textbook to approach the statistical graphic mathematical object in the fifth grade of elementary school. Specifically, the structure associated to the text activities is exposed through Raymond Duval’s semiotic approaches, identifying representations of different statistical graphs, conversion processes and treatment associated to them. This is carried out using a qualitative methodological design, framed in a case study, to discuss the emerging data from the documentary analysis of the selected school text. The results obtained show a lack of adequate management of the meaning of statistical graphs, an articulation of the representations was identified that leads to an isolated and non-significant work of said mathematical object.
