The substitution in E. Levinas and its implications in education

Abstract

In this work, the author addresses substitution in the thinking of E. Levinas. He places responsibility as a relevant concern in today’s society, to the point of considering it the “issue of our time”. He also develops the concept of substitution and its biblical background, which is inevitable as the foundation of substitution in E. Levinas. In his aim to bring this into the classroom, he proposes  the following pedagogical strategy: a) to act in the student’s immediate environment, such as their own family or home; b) to act in the classroom (the environment closest to the students) and in the community to which they belong; c) to act in the more distant environment. In other words, it is a matter of applying the strategy of expanding concentric circles, starting with the closest or most immediate events or occurrences and then moving on to the most distant ones.
