Reading habits: A sociodemographic analysis of parents and students at a public school in Bogotá, Colombia

Abstract
This study examines the formation of reading habits within the family environment and their impact on the school context of sixth-grade students at La Felicidad School in Bogotá, Colombia. Through a sociodemographic survey administered to parents, the research explores reading patterns and the factors that influence the consolidation of reading habits. Objective: To analyze students’ reading practices in a specific educational context in order to identify their characteristics, tensions, and pedagogical possibilities. Method: The study follows a quantitative approach based on data collected through a sociodemographic survey applied to parents. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test and Cramér’s V coefficient to identify significant relationships between family reading practices and students’ school performance. Results: The findings indicate that both the family environment and reading practices developed outside the classroom play a fundamental role in the development of reading habits, highlighting the opportunities as well as the barriers that shape these practices. Conclusion: Strengthening reading habits within the home environment emerges as a key factor for improving students’ learning processes in the school context. Contribution: This study provides significant evidence and findings regarding the influence of the family environment on the development of reading habits; likewise, it suggests pedagogical pathways between school and family in order to enhance academic learning from early childhood.
