Abstract

The process of learning a foreign language must be transformed into an opportunity for a deep, meaningful, and functional learning experience. Therefore, the educational model required today must transcend traditional modes and seek models that highlight the promotion of competences and notions that promote a profound change in the way individuals perceive others and reality. To mediate that, this reflection proposes theoretical constructs and build the case around two language methods to mediate and promote intercultural citizenship and the need to develop intercultural communicative competence as key competences in today´s society. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a reflection on the need to integrate the notion and practices of intercultural citizenship explicitly and consistently mediated in the foreign language classroom to entitle learners with the ability to engage in transparent dialogical interactions, healthy coexistence, respect for diversity, intercultural collaboration and the rediscovery of one’s own culture and cultural identity as well. Education in its social role must respond to the challenges and needs humanity endures. In the context of a health crisis and economical disruptions, nations must promote trends and ideas that contribute in a comprehensive approach to the constant local and international changes that permeate reality.
