Basic motor skills in schoolchildren of an educational institution in the department of Boyacá, Colombia

Abstract

Problem: The assessment of basic motor skills (HMB) at an early age is fundamental for proper motor development; however, it is an aspect that is under-evaluated. Objective: To characterize the HMB profile in boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 11. Method: A quantitative, nonexperimental, descriptive study was conducted. The sample was selected using non-probability convenience sampling and consisted of 40 fourth-grade students from a Nuestra Educational Institution in the department of Boyacá, Colombia. The assessment was performed using the battery of tests on HMB for school-aged children proposed by González et al. (2021). Statistical analysis was performed using Jamovi software version 2.3.28, which involved descriptive and correlational statistics, comparisons between groups, and cluster analysis (k-means). Results: The majority of students assessed presented low levels of development in the different BMS and their overall scores. No differences were found by gender or age. The different manifestations of basic motor skills (HMB) were positively and strongly correlated with the total skill score (p<0.01). Cluster analysis identified two groups distinguished by their different levels of HMB development: very low (requiring priority attention) and low (requiring attention). Conclusion: The level of development of basic motor skills in the evaluated students is deficient, and intervention through physical education classes is necessary.
