Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the influence of the strategy of thinking aloud on university students’ reading comprehension.  Thirty-six students from an Ecuadorian public university participated in the study. At the time of the study, the students were taking an English proficiency course required within the curriculum of their careers.  Their selection was not random.  The data was obtained from a placement test, reading comprehension tests, observation notes and recorded activities of thinking aloud.  These data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and their results revealed an acceptable level of reading comprehension by the participants during the first reading test while in the second test they had poor performance.  On the other hand, the students showed a great lack of knowledge and understanding regarding the topics presented during the activities of thinking aloud.
